Nian - A Children Musical is a project collaboration between Helen O’Grady Drama Academy (Zhuhai) and Dama Asia -that was initiated in 2019. The project aims to introduce musical theatre to the children as well as to foster their learning of English through drama. The modular programme comprises both on-site and online workshops and coaching, with mini showcases at the end of each module. This interdisciplinary training program focuses on the triple threat elements of musical theatre.
The musical is based on a Chinese New Year fable. It tells of the tale of a faraway village being besieged by the terrifying beast Nian. In confronting the enraged beast, the villagers soon discover that the beast is frightened of red colour, loud drumming noises and fiery lights, which they eventually utilise to subdue the beast. The story ends with the villagers and Nian ushering in the Lunar New Year with a mutual understanding of the need to co-exist in harmony and care for the environment.
